About Us

Madison SOS (Speak Out, Sister!) is a youth-led initiative uniting high school teen girls across the city in leadership and action. It's a place for girls to stand up and speak out on the issues that most matter to them.

Since its launch in early 2007, Madison SOS has tackled a variety of initiatives to engage teen girls as community leaders and social change-makers.

Madison SOS has received national recognition for its efforts to engage the next generation of women leaders, through initiatives such as:

  • THE YOUNG WOMEN'S LEADERSHIP FORUM: A fall 2007 workshop series on community leadership, focusing on tools for advocacy and activism - from letter-writing to slam poetry

  • VOICES OF COURAGE: An exciting November 2007 community forum highlighting the work of local women leaders, like former Attorney General Peg Lautenschlager and United Way VP Renee Moe

  • GIRLS' VOICES MURAL: Throughout the summer of 2008, teen artists have worked under the leadership of local muralist Sheba McCants to design and paint a mural celebrating their dreams for the future of their community at the Wisconsin Youth and Family Center

  • SISSTAYS DOCUMENTARY: Madison SOS is partnering this fall with the Wexford Ridge Neighborhood Center-based group SISSTAYS to create a documentary by, about, and for high school young women and the issues they face

  • PLATFORM FOR ACTION: Throughout 2008, Madison SOS has worked with girls' groups and community stakeholders to create a girl-written roadmap for progress on the issues that most matter to Madison young women

Madison SOS hopes to keep working for years to come to build a city where teen girls are valued as active community stakeholders. Future plans include providing leadership development, training, and support for girls' groups interested in launching grassroots action projects; hosting fall 2008 candidate forums on young women's issues; and launching an online forum connecting action-oriented young women across the city.
