Volunteer Opportunities

Advocacy Volunteer
Duties: Write letters, meet with and/or make phone calls to elected officials on American Cancer Society legislative concerns, e.g., ensuring health benefits for cancer patients, restricting youth from buying tobacco, etc.
Time Required: Varies/as needed.
Qualifications: Good communication skills, a desire to make a difference.

Community Action Team Member
Duties: Help determine community's focus on cancer burden and complete action plan.
Time Required: 1-3 hours per month.
Qualifications: Good communication skills, community knowledge, ability to meet time commitments and task assignments, desire to make a difference. Committee member assignment may require more specific qualifications.

Daffodil Days
Positions: Sales Coordinator, Delivery.
Duties: Help with various jobs, e.g., routing order forms at businesses, promoting within schools and churches, make deliveries, on-site sales.
Time Required: 4-8 hours week of event. Sales coordinators: 2-6 hours a month.
Qualifications: Good communication skills, community knowledge, ability to meet time commitments and task assignments, desire to make a difference.

Friend to Friend Volunteer
Duties: Share the importance of mammograms through a small group program/party. Ideal for churches, women's groups and senior centers.
Time Required: Approximately 10 hours to invite women, plan and conduct each program.
Qualifications: Must attend Friend to Friend training and have a desire to help women understand the importance of mammography.

Golf Events
Positions: Day of Event Volunteer, Committee Member.
Duties: Help with various jobs, e.g., hole watchers, silent auction, raffle, registration.
Time Required: 4-8 hours day of event.
Committee member: 2-10 hours a month.
Qualifications: Good communication skills, community knowledge, ability to meet time commitments and task assignments, desire to make a difference.

Health Systems Activities at Relay For Life
Duties: Coordinate cancer prevention and educational activities at Relay For Life event.
Time Required: 2-10 hours plus time at Relay For Life event.
Qualifications: A desire to spread the important message of prevention and early detection. Good communication skills.

Media Spokesperson
Duties: Work with local American Cancer Society staff to publicize events and programs. Talk to media about your personal story, and the American Cancer Society mission. Opportunities include speaking to reporters for newspapers, radio and TV.
Time Required: 2 hours for each event.
Qualifications: Excellent communications skills. Ability to convey a clear message regarding the American Cancer Society.

Office Assistant
Duties: General office help. Label and stuff envelopes, collate paperwork. answer phone calls, data entry, etc.
Time Required: As needed.
Qualifications: General office and/or computer skills and a friendly attitude that will help make a difference in our community.

Patient Partner
Duties: Provide information or emotional support to patients, survivors and their support network.
Time Required: Varies/as needed.
Qualifications: Cancer survivor or family member of someone who has had cancer. Desire to share knowledge and experience with others.

Reach to Recovery Visitor
Duties: Visit with newly diagnosed and recently treated breast cancer patients.
Time Required: Varies/as needed.
Qualifications: Breast cancer survivor with doctor's approval. Must attend training. Good communication skills. A desire to show the hopeful side of cancer. in a person's life.

Relay For Life
Positions: Day of Event Volunteer, Committee Member, Team Captain.
Duties: Help with various jobs, e.g., registration, set-up, luminarias, team recruitment, sponsorship solicitation, various activities and clean-up.
Time: 4-18 hours day of event, Committee members: 2-10 hours a month.
Qualifications: Good communication skills, community knowledge, ability to meet time commitments and task assignments, desire to make a difference. Committee member assignment may require more specific qualifications.

Road to Recovery Driver
Duties: Drive cancer patients to and from cancer treatments.
Time Required: 2-5 hours per patient trip on weekdays.
Qualifications: Must attend training. Need reliable, insured vehicle. Friendly, warm and confidential person who wants to make a difference in a person's life.

Run/Walk Events
Positions: Day of Event Volunteer, Committee Member.
Duties: Help with various jobs, e.g., water stops, finish line, walk marshal, registration, set-up, clean-up.
Time Required: 4-8 hours day of the event. Committee member: 2-10 hours a month.
Qualifications: Good communication skills, community knowledge, ability to meet time commitments and task assignments, desire to make a difference.

Specialty Parties
Positions: Day of Event Volunteer, Committee Member.
Duties: Help with various jobs, e.g., silent auction, raffle, registration, set-up, clean-up.
Time Required: 4-8 hours day of event. Committee member: 2-10 hours a month.
Qualifications: Good communication skills, community knowledge, ability to meet time commitments and task assignments, desire to make a difference.

Tell A Friend Program Coordinator
Duties: Recruit 10 women to call/contact their family and friends to encourage them to get a mammogram. Assist with caller training and follow-up.
Time Required: Average of 15 hours over 3 months for caller recruitment, caller training and follow-up.
Qualifications: Must attend a Tell A Friend training and have a desire to help women understand the importance of mammography.
