Kennedy Heights Community Center
|
Kennedy Heights Community Center provides social, cultural, recreational,
and educational programs for the children and adults living at Kennedy Heights
in the hopes of adding variety and enrichment to their lives.
Description: The Kennedy Heights Community Center is a community center serving
the northside of Madison -- specifically the 104 apartments in the
Kennedy Heights apartments. The community center and
its programs foster community building for the many diverse
families living in this neighborhood.
Kennedy Heights Community Center has a twenty-two year history of providing programs and services to the Kennedy Heights community. Started as YARA (Your All Resident Association) in 1978, the organization then became the Kennedy Heights Neighborhood Association in 1983 and by 1986 the community center opened and started offering a summer program to children. The community center is located in the heart of 104 units of low-income housing and over 160 children live within a two block radius of the center. As the community has changed over the last twenty-two years center programming and services have responded to community needs. Today, the Kennedy Heights Community Center has a well qualified, professional staff providing programs and coordinating services. Administrative and policy improvements over the last four years have strengthened center's operations and programmatic outcomes. Most programs run at full capacity and many programs maintain a waiting list throughout the year. Residents are involved as clients, volunteers and board members. Many residents actively participate in program planning and driving the center vision through formal and informal processes.
