What is Madison Area Crime Stoppers
Madison Area Crime Stoppers, Inc. is a non-profit organization affiliated with Crime Stoppers International
- and one of several units operating in Wisconsin. MACS serves all communities in Dane County.
MACS involves the public, the media, and the police in a fight against crime. Crime Stoppers offers anonymity
and cash rewards to persons who furnish information that leads to an arrest.
Funding
MACS does not receive funding from any federal, state or local governmental sources. We are a volunteer organization and are supported soley by community contributions. Your contributions are needed to help keep us in business.
How MACS Works
When tipsters call, they are given a coded number to protect their identities. The tips are passed to local police. If an arrest is made, a reward is calculated by Crime Stoppers and paid confidentially through a local bank.
Dane County police departments support Crime Stoppers. The City of Madison assigns a police officer to the program, and several community departments share the job of taking telephone tips.
Are We Effective? 2838 Cases Closed
In 2003, MACS won several awards at the international level for the excellence of its programs.
In 2004, MACS tips led to 73 arrests, and recovered over $17,000 in stolen property and $55,000 in drugs.
2004 rewards totaled over $9,000. Over the past 20 years, MACS has helped solve 2,838 crimes (25 homicides!), recover over $1 million in stolen property, seize over $4 million in illegal drugs, and arrest 1,634 offenders.
Basic Principles
Someone other than the criminal has knowledge of the crime.
Citizens can assist the professional law enforcement and in doing so, protect themselves and others.
Citizens need an easy and confidential way to participate in "community policing." When people get involved, more crimes get solved
Who Qualifies???? You Do!
Those individuals who choose to relay information through Crime Stoppers are eligible for a reward.
Only if the information goes through Crime Stoppers can a person be considered for a reward.
Crime Stoppers and The Media
Crime Stoppers could not get its message out into the community without
cooperation from the local media. For instance, this home page is courtesy of Capital Newspapers Community Pages sponsored by Madison Gas and Electric.
Since 2001 WKOW Channel 27 has been airing a weekly "Crime Stopper", which features recent crimes or profiles wanted
persons. These can be seen on Saturdays at 6pm. Currently,
Charter Cable Channel 18 plays Community Crime Watch several times daily and features wanted people and local crime
information. Abella Audio Productions does all the production work and distribution of featured
unsolved crimes for airing on Madison area radio stations. Such strong support by the local
media has a direct impact on our community's fight against crime.
