Madison United Soccer Club | |
First the bad... We learned yesterday that one of our alumni recently passed away. On July 11th, 2008 Chris Birdsall died of a heart attack at the young age of only 46. His wife, Tracy, assured us that she and their two young children are doing well. There will be a memorial service in Racine, WI at a later date. Chris played for Racine Soccer Club in the Major Division but then joined United in 1989 when he moved to Madison. He will be in our thoughts. The good... While it was disappointing that United could only manage to scrape together one team for this fun tournament, most who went to Dubuque would agree that it was a good time... actually they would say that it was "a great time!" The performance on the field was not spectacular but given to fact that this was a United team with several new faces and players from several different United teams we did as well as could be expected. The team tied one game and lost two, however, the most important goal of the tournament was achieved with great gusto... having a great time! So in some sort of logical order, sans actual game footage, here's some photos...
Keeper James Bennett & Shannon Riley contemplate the large holes in the United defense... or the large beers to be consumed later!
Two games done and one more to go for Tom Keepers.
After a dip in the pool the team sat down for a great dinner and thoughts of the party after wards!
Keith & Shereen discuss tactics and physical play.
Kareoke starts... Keith and Dante get things going... Followed by the girls...
and it went down hill from there! But the next day it was back to business as usual. All in all, it was a fun weekend. Hopefully next year we can include more United teams. Pencil in the first weekend in August. Let's make it a family affair. It really was a great time.
And... now the awesome news... Madison United is moving back into the State Major League. After a 13 year hiatus, United is moving a team into the highest level of soccer in the state. Opposition in this league will include the Milwaukee Bavarians, Milwaukee Kicker and Sport Club, the Serbian and Croatian Soccer Clubs. The Club has been building towards this move for the last two years after winning the local league and City Cup several times in the last few years. Raj Rajani, the Manager of the United Majors, managed to recruit several of the best players in Madison including players from the Madison Fire and Princeton 56ers teams. Last weekend, the team tested their skills in Milwaukee at the Croatian tournament and lost in the final, drawing rave reviews from all of the participating teams. The team will kickoff their season, this Sunday, September 7th at Warner Park against the Milwaukee Sport Club. The kickoff is scheduled for 3pm. There will be a nominal cover charge of only $3.00 |
